Mandorah is on the western side of Darwin Harbour on the Cox Peninsula, a pleasant 15-minute Sealink ferry ride from Cullen Bay.
Wagait Beach is about 4 kilometres from Mandorah, on the ocean facing beaches.
Fishing at the Mandorah ferry jetty is a popular pastime for visitors from the city, especially during the dry season and at full moon, when mackerel and tuna come within casting distance.
Along the shoreline from the jetty there are the historic remains of WWII fortifications.
The nearby small community of Wagait Beach is a popular weekender destination for Darwin, with several options for holiday accommodation and camping. It is the location of the popular Mandorah Ukulele Folk Festival held annually on the last weekend of June.
Several organised tours show visitors around the Termite Mounds, the war heritage site of a crashed American bomber in the forest, and sunset drinks from one of the picturesque and unspoilt sandy beaches. Wildlife you may spot include dingos, turtles, dolphins and even Mantarays.
Wagait Beach has a shop which sells meals and coffee, and there is a fully licensed social club serving drinks and meals under the Banyan trees, open Thursday - Sunday.
